Burberry names new Chinese ambassador: actress Tang Wei

Burberry has a new brand ambassador. Award-winning Chinese actress Tang Wei becomes the latest to join its roster of high-profile celebrities and comes at a time when the British luxury fashion house is anticipating a rebound in the hugely important Asian market in the post-pandemic era.
The globally renowned actress has starred in numerous roles such as ‘Late Autumn,’ ‘The Golden Era,’ ‘Crossing Hennessy’ and ‘Decision to Leave’ that have garnered international acclaim.
Accolades include the China Film Directors' Guild Award for Actress of the Year, the Asian Film Award for Best Actress, the Korean Blue Dragon Film Award for Best Actress and two Korean Baeksang Arts Awards for Best Actress.
Tang Wei said: “I adore Burberry’s distinct mastery of colour and lines, which exudes a sense of both familiarity and novelty. It’s a British charm that I've come to know and love, coupled with a timeless yet rebellious modern spirit.”
Importantly, she joins another award-winning actress Jun Ji-hyun on the label’s the roster who became the brand’s its first female ambassador from South Korea.
The firm’s latest financial numbers showed first half Asia Pacific sales grew 18% with a strong Q1 recovery of 36% against a period that saw Covid-related disruption in Mainland China.
Mainland China comparable store sales increased 15% in the half but Q2 fell 8% as spending shifted offshore, although the Chinese customer group grew 25%.
